BOSTON — Stunning drone video showed a gigantic humpback whale enjoying the sunrise in Boston Harbor over the weekend.
Video captured by photographer Charlie Nutting and shared with Boston 25 News showed the whale floating at a leisurely pace around 7:30 a.m. Sunday.
In an Instagram post, Nutting wrote, “Humpback whales typically sleep floating motionless for up to 30 minutes at a time. This one wasn’t still but it was definitely pre-coffee.
Nutting told Boston 25 that he saw at least two other whales in the area during the morning.
The whales congregated this summer off Plymouth, where they fed. Federal and local officials urged boaters last week to avoid the whales after a series of close encounters.
Many viral videos of whale encounters have emerged in recent days, including one taken by a boater that showed a piercing whale landing on a boat.
Officials have asked boaters to stay at least 100 meters from whales whenever possible, limit sighting time to 30 minutes, refrain from trapping whales between their boat and shore, respect the space between the mother and her young and to stay away from food sources. .
This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
